Getting Started: Action Speaks Louder than Words

Like most of us, I am someone with a mix of knowledge, skills, and abilities. I can easily create a vision for myself, and what I want my future to look like. But, how do I get there?

When I was a teenager, I didn’t know what the hell to do. The only thing I was good at that felt worthwhile was writing music. But, my mom would always say “you better have a back-up plan!” What a motivation killer that was. I knew she wanted the best for me, and she was aware how hard it was for people to make a living in the music business. But that was all I wanted to do. My discouragement led to some not-so-good choices. I felt lost, and did not know what opportunities were out there for someone like me. I fell into some very hard times, and am lucky to be alive today.

As I entered my twenties, I became more mature–and a little wiser. I decided to go back to school. I got a job at the college I started my undergrad and still work there to this day helping adult learners create a vision for their lives both personally and professionally. The experience has been so valuable for me in that I have learned just as much about forming my own vision for my career and my life. However, it hasn’t been so easy.

I battle major depression and physical health issues that make daily life difficult. I find myself stuck often times, unable to continue my journey toward progress that I need in order to feel worth anything. I got my BA in business, and a ton of experience in my field, but I have remained stagnant in my career, in earning potential, and in my life.

I have so many useful skills and abilities. But how do I turn that into progress? How do I earn enough to keep the lights on and hopefully, meet those goals I have for my family and I? Well, I’ve explored many avenues. First, I’ve tried applying for jobs at the next level in my current field–with no luck. I’ve learned how to produce music, but most artists can record themselves these days. I’ve started a YouTube channel, but have a busy life as a father, and someone who works full-time, so getting content up on a regular basis has been impossible–so far. I’ve even learned how to trade in the stock market! Without enough capital to start with, even the best trader cannot do much, quickly enough, to make it a steady stream of income. I get stuck on all of these things.

I have come to realize that even the best ideas don’t mean anything without ACTION. I am someone who plans, and plans, and plans some more–trying to make things perfect before I start. In school, this often led to me procrastinating until the last minute (literally sometimes.) You just have to get started!

Start something. Do you have a goal to build something, get started. Do you want to learn a new skill? Get started! We all know that unless we start, we will never finish anything. That is what this site and blog is all about. I am getting started. I want to discuss news, politics, culture, economics, personal development, philosophy, etc. I want to help people become better. I want to inspire others to do something they want to do, or to improve themselves–no matter how incrementally it may be. Start something today. See where it leads. You surely have something to share that will add value to the lives of others, so take action. I will leave it there for now. I hope to add more as time goes on, and see what we can create from this first step.
